Catch the magic

Upshot Coffee in Cottleville, Missouri prides itself on quality coffee, exploration, and creativity. During my time there as a barista, I combined my passions for coffee and design and created solutions to improve the flow of the cafe and enhance the customer experience.

Menus

My first big project was creating a new menu system. With the installation of new TVs above the bar, it was the perfect opportunity to create a purposeful, clear, and elevated design.

The goal was to create a visually cohesive, easily read, and flexible menu system for both TV and handheld presentations. Combined with a new set of brand standards, I created a set of menus that achieved just that, along with a series of templates for rotating advertisements.

Retail Labels

A big seller at Upshot is the variety of grab-and-go items from the fridge, including overnight oats, bottled house-made syrups, salads, and more.

To aid the customer experience and help these items stand out, I created a series of labels that clearly define each product and fit them into the Upshot brand.

Team Member Handbook

The team member handbook is a short booklet given to new hires that contains information about the company, as well as details about employment and operations at the cafe. Utilizing unique photography, bold colors, and illustrations by Eric Hungerford, this booklet is much more than just a list of rules.

Photography

Coffee is a fascinating photography subject. From slow drips to bold splashes, its movement is something I’ve become entranced by.

The photography work I’ve done for Upshot places emphasis on the creativity and joy found in brewing coffee, as well as the precision and science behind it. Several of these photos were explorations of harsh light and shadow.
